Thispaperreportsonalaboratory-basedstudycarriedouttoevaluatetheeffectivenessofsurfacetreatmentsonthedurabilityofconcreteandsuggestsanumberofdifferentevaluationmethodologiesforassessingtheperformanceofvarioussurfacetreatments.Durabilityofuntreatedandtreatedconcretespecimenswasevaluatedbymeasuringchloridediffusion,chargepassingcapacity,airpermeabilityandwaterabsorption.Atotalofsixconcretesurfacetreatmentswereselectedtorepresentdifferentgenerictypes,includingcoating,penetrantandmixed-usetreatments.Resultsshowthattheconcretespecimenswithacoatingprocedurehaveabetterlong-termperformanceandeffectivenessthanthespecimenswiththepenetranttreatments.Thisworkalsoindicatesthatthewettinganddryingcyclestestcanbeusedtoassesstheweatherabilityofthesurfacetreatments.TheASTMC1202andtheAutoclamairpermeabilitytestcanbeusedtoevaluatetheeffectivenessofsurfacetreatmentsquantitatively.Furtherworkisneeded,however,toassessthelongevityofthevarioussurfacetreatments.
