The Improvement of Teachers' Professional Competence From the Perspective of New Liberal Arts and Great Foreign Languages

【Abstract】The "Three Changes, Two Innovations and Two Macro" in Higher Foreign Language Education have been the hot topics in the field of foreign language education in recent years. This paper, based on the new era, from the perspective of new liberal arts and great foreign languages, expounds the definition of contemporary teachers, and then focuses on the promotion of teachers' professional competence and quality.

1. Background of New Liberal Arts and Great Foreign Language.

In 2019, Chinese scholars Wang Mingyu and Zhang Tao put forward the view of new liberal arts, "Compared with the traditional liberal arts, it is based on the global new scientific and technological revolution, the new economic development, and the new era of socialism with Chinese characteristics. Break through the traditional liberal arts thinking mode, to inherit and innovation, cross and integration, collaboration and sharing as the main way to promote interdisciplinary and in-depth integration."

What is a "Great Foreign Language"? Foreign Language Education has changed from cultural input in the past to cultural output in the present age, that is, to export Chinese culture abroad. Foreign Language Education is required to cultivate international talents with global vision, who are familiar with international rules and proficient in negotiation and communication between China and foreign countries, especially training these professional technicians who master English and work in the field of the Belt and Road construction.

In such a new historical period, foreign language teachers in higher vocational colleges urgently need to improve their own professional ability and professionalism to meet the needs of the times.

2. The Definition of Teacher in the New Era.

Teachers Law of The People's Republic of China stipulates that teachers are professionals who exercise the functions of education and teaching and are charged with the duty of imparting knowledge and educating people, training builders and successors for the socialist cause and enhancing the quality of the nation.

People have many views on "teacher" since ancient times. "A teacher is one who could propagate the doctrine,impart professional knowledge,and resolve doubts." "spring silkworm will weave until they die and burn the candle at both ends." "Teachers are engineers of the human soul." "A teacher is a gardener." "If a teacher wants to give his students a bowl of water, he must have a bucket of water. Therefore, teachers are socialized ordinary people. They are these who are to promote the all-round development of students and are constantly developing and improving in their dealings with their students. In combination with the global development of new science and technology, the new economic development and the new socialist era, As a foreign language teacher, one should actively respond to the challenges brought by the new technological revolution, including translation software, machine translation and so on. This requires a certain degree of professional competence, namely four main professional skills.

3. The professional competence of teachers.

Teachers must have professional ability is pided into four kinds of professional skills: teaching management ability, teaching cognitive ability, the teaching operation ability and teaching innovation ability. The first three abilities are the basic abilities to be an excellent teacher, and the fourth one is the advanced abilities.

3.1 Teaching management is the overall management of teaching process according to the teaching law and characteristics in order to achieve teaching objectives. The core of this system is to establish and improve the incentive and restraint mechanism for students and to implement effective incentives for students. The "Pygmalion effect" tells us that expectation and praise can work wonders. Therefore, teachers can put forward appropriate hopes and requirements for students of different levels, so that they have a "jump can pick a peach" sense of joy.

3.2 Teaching is a bilateral activity, which requires the joint participation of teachers and students. According to Piaget's theory, cognitive development is a balanced process of assimilation and adaptation. Moreover, education is a cognitive process in which both teaching and learning benefit each other. Therefore, teachers in teaching activities should not only use the old view to deal with the new situation, but also change the old point of view to adapt to new circumstances. This puts forward five requirements for teachers:

① Ability to apply educational theory and psychological theory

② Ability to analysis and master the syllabus

③ Ability to analysis and deal with teaching materials

④ Teaching design ability

⑤ The ability to understand students' learning characteristics

3.3 The teaching operation ability is also the teacher's teaching activity practice ability. Teachers are required to use their mouth and hands, but also to use their brains and hearts. This ability puts three requirements on teachers.

① Language ability

② Non-verbal ability

③ Ability to grasp information technology

4. Teaching innovation ability.

To realize the teaching innovation, we must first have the people-oriented education theory as the guide. Secondly, there must be an operable method. Finally, it must pass the test of teaching practice. The key is whether the education idea and the teaching method have changed or not. The ability to innovate needs opportunities under certain conditions. With the preparation in advance, we still need an opportunity to come up with new ideas in order to have innovation. Therefore, teaching innovation needs long-term practical experience accumulation, deep professional knowledge foundation, and an appropriate time.
