ThenormalhypervelocityimpactofanAl-thinplatebyanAl-spherewasnumericallysimulatedbyusingtheadaptivesmoothedparticlehydrodynamics(ASPH)method.Inthismethod,theisotropicsmoothingalgorithmofstandardSPHisreplacedwithanisotropicsmoothinginvolvingellipsoidalkernelswhoseaxesevolveautomaticallytofollowthemeanparticlespacingasitvariesintime,space,anddirectionaroundeachparticle.UsingtheASPH,theanisotropicvolumechangesunderstrongshockconditionarecapturedmoreaccuratelyandclearly.ThesophisticatedfeaturesofmeshlessandLagrangiannatureinherentintheSPHmethodarekeptfortreatinglargedeformations,largeinhomogeneitiesandtracingfreesurfacesintheextremelytransientimpactprocess.Atwo-dimensionalASPHprogramiscodedwithC++.Thedevelopedhydrocodeisexaminedforexampleproblemsofhypervelocityimpactsofsolidmaterials.Theresultsobtainedfromthenumericalsimulationarecomparedwithavailableexperimentalones.Goodagreementisobserved.
