TherelationshipbetweenCharpyabsorbedenergyandthefracturetoughnessbymeansofthe(cracktipopeningdisplacement(CTOD))methodwasanalyzedbasedontheWeibullstresscriterion.TheCharpyabsorbedenergyandthefracturetoughnessweremeasuredfortheSN490Bsteelundertheductile-brittletransitiontemperatureregion.FortheinstrumentedCharpyimpacttest,thecurvesbetweentheloadingpointdisplacementandtheloadagainsttimewererecorded.ThecriticalWeibullstresswastakenasafracturecontrolledparameter,anditcouldnotbeaffectedbythespecimenconfigurationandtheloadingpatternbasedonthelocalapproach.TheparameterscontrolledbrittlefractureareobtainedfromtheCharpyabsorbedenergyresults,thenthefracturetoughnessforthecompacttension(CT)specimenispredicted.Itisfoundthattheresultspredictedareingoodagreementwiththeexperimental.ThefracturetoughnesscouldbeevaluatedbytheCharpyabsorbedenergy,becausethelocalapproachgivesagooddescriptionforthebrittlefractureeventhoughtheCharpyimpactspecimenortheCTspecimenisusedforthegivenmaterial.
