Urbangreening,urbanforestryandurbangreenstructureplanningalllookatacityasaunitandintendtoimprovethestatusofgreenspaceinthecity.Eventhoughtheyarenewterms,theirconceptshaveevolvedoveraratherlongperiod.Thispaperpresentsahistoricalreviewofwesternconceptsforurbangreeningsincethe1850s.Thefirstaimistoestablishanoverviewofhowtheurbangreeningconcepthasdevelopedandwhattherelationshipsarebetweenthehistoricalconceptsandurbangreening,urbanforestryandurbangreenstructureplanningtoday.Thesecondarypurposeistounderstandsomekeyissuesforurbangreeningthroughtheexaminationofhistoricalprecedents.Basedonaliteraturereview,thepaperpresentsseveralhistoricalconceptsforurbangreening-rampartareaplanning,parksystem,greenbelts,greenwedgesandgreenways.Thenewconceptofurbangreenstructureisalsointroduced.Eachconceptisdefined.Thesocialbackgroundandtheinfluenceoncitydevelopmentaredescribed.Thereviewshowsthattheconceptofurbangreeninghasalonghistory,parallelwiththedevelopmentofthecityplanningconcepts.Thescopeofurbangreeninghasbecomelargeroverthepastyears.Thefunctionsofurbangreenspacehavechangedfromsingle-purposetomulti-purpose.Thestudyindicatesthathistoricalconceptsmaystillgiveinspirationintoday'surbangreeningprocess.
