Clinical Presentation of Atypical Genital Herpes

Objective:Tomakeaclinicalanalysisonthebasisof36casesofatypicalgenitalherpes(GH)patients.Methods:Thirty-sixcasesofatypicalGHwerediagnosedclinically,andtheircasehistories,symptomsandsignswererecordedindetailandfollowedup.Polymerasechainreaction(PCR)wasadoptedfortestingHSV2-DNAwithcotton-tippedswabs.Enzyme-linkedimmunosorbentassay(ELISA)forserumanti-HSV2-IgMwasdonetoestablishadefinfiivediagnosis.Otherdiagnoseswereexcludedatthesametimebytestingforrelatedpathogensincludingfungi,Chlamydia,Mycoplasma,Treponemapallidum,gonococci,Trichomonas,etc.Results:ThemainclinicalmanifestationsofatypicalGHwere:(1)smallgenitalulcers;(2)inflammationofurethralmeatus;(3)nonspecificgenitalerythema;(4)papuloidnodulesontheglands;(5)nonspecificvaginitis.Twenty-threecases(64%)testedbyPCRwereHSV2-DNAsera-positive,and36cases(100%)anti-HSV2-IgMsera-positivebyELISA.Conclusion:atypicalHSVisdifficulttobediagnosed.ButthecombinationofPCRandELIASwillbehelpfultothediagnosisofatypicalHSV.
