TheGavdNeolithicMiningComplex(GNMC)nearBarcelonawasactiveduringtheNeolithicage,sinceca.6000BPuntilabout700yearsafter.Theseminesshowuptofivedifferentundergroundmininglevels,developedasgalleriesandchambers,communicatedthroughpits,drawingacomplexnetworkwithatotalknownlengthofover1000m.ThesearesomeoftheoldestundergroundminesinEuropebut,contrarytotherestofthemineworkingsknownofthesameepoch,thisistheonlyminingcomplexreportedtodatewhoseaimwasnotminingforconventionalsubstancesfortheepochsuchaschert,ochreorcopper.ThemainaimoftheGNMCwasvariscite,agreenphosphatemineralsimilartoturquoisethatcanbeeasilycutandpolishedtomakeornamentssuchasnecklacesorbracelets.Thispaperisfocusedmainlyonthegeologicalmappingandexaminationinsurfaceandundergroundexposuresofthedifferentphosphatemineralizationtypes(strataboundandveins)andotherrelevantgeologicalfeaturessuchasdiscordances,thrusts,faults,andfolds.
