Inthemodernera,theJewish-AmericanswerefacedwithchallengesbecauseoftheassimilationandmodernityenvironmentintheUS,andasaresult,manyofthemwereinadoublebind—tobeanassimilatedAmericancitizenortobeatraditionalJew.Withhiswork"TheImportedBridegroom",AbrahamCahancontemplatedonthesubjectofJewishimmigrationandassimilationandhemadeaground-breakingcontributiontotheestablishmentofAmericanmodernity.ThispaperintendstoanalyzeCahan’sattitudestowardsassimilationandmodernityandhowhebuildsupmodernityforalloftheAmericans.Threecharactersin"TheImportedBridegroom",whostandforthreeprototypesofmodernJewish-Americansconfrontingtheoverwhelmingfloodofassimilationandthedutyforretainingtheirtraditions,willbeanalyzed.Throughthecompositionofthiswork,CahantriedtospreadtheJewishcultureontheonehand,andontheother,hewarnedtheperipheralthatitwasdifficulttobeassimilatedwithoutdisasterseveniftheyhadmadecontributiontotheformationofmodernity.
