FixedammoniumcontentsandNH4^+fixationcapacitiesofsomerepresentativecultivatedsoliscollectedfrom16provincesofChinawerestudied.Resultsshowedthatthecontentsoffixedammoniuminsoilsrangedfrom35to573mgNkg^-1,withanaverageof198mgNkg^-1.Thecontentoffixedammoniumcorrelatedverysignificantlywithmicacontentfortropicalandsubtropicalsoils,whereasthiswasnotthecaseforsoilsinthetemperatezone.AttheendofK-exhaustingexperimentthefixedammoniumcontentincreasedinmostsoilsstudied.However,itdecreasedinsmomtemperatesoils.Generally,fixationofaddedNH4^+couldnotbefoundeitherbeforeorafterK-exhaustingexperimentforhighlyweatheredsoils,includingtropicalsoilsandsoilsderivedfromgranite-gneissorQuaternaryredclaysinthesubtropiczone,whileformostsoilsintheYangtzeRiverdaltatheNH4^+fixationcapacitywasratherhighandincreasedsignificantlyintheK-exhaustedsoils.
