TheEuropeanstainlesssteelproducersgenerate20-30kgdustpertonofproducedstainlesssteel.ThedustformedduringvariousstagesoftheproductionprocesscontainsvaluablemetalssuchasCr,NiandMo.Ingeneralthisdustisconsideredasahazardouswaste.Ifnottakencareofthedustwillbeanenvironmentalriskcausingpotentialproblemssuchasleachingofheavymetalsintogroundwaterandpollutionoflandandair.Byapplyingtechniquesforrecyclingthedusttheproblemisminimizedandvaluablemetalsarerecoveredandre-usedasrawmaterialinthesteelmakingprocess,leadingtoasignificantreductionoftheconsumptionofnaturalresourcestodeceleratetheclimatechangeandensureasustainabledevelopment.OneofthebusinesssegmentsofBefesaZincS.L.U.,asubsidiarycompanyofAbengoa,istherecyclingofdustsandotherresiduescontainingnickel,chromiumandmolybdenumfromthestainlesssteelindustry.Thetechnologiesappliedaresubmergedarcreductionsmelting(BefesaValeraS.A.S.,Gravelines,France)andplasmareductionsmelting(BefesaScanDustAB,Landskrona,Sweden).Stainlesssteelplantdusts,millscaleandotherresiduesaredeliveredinclosedcontainersandbigbagsbyship,railortruckandstored.Afterapreparationoftheresiduesandchargingintothepyrometallurgicalfurnace,themetalcompoundscontainedinthechargearereducedtometalsinthepresenceofthecarbonadded.AtBefesaScanDust,theregularlytappedliquidmetaliscastintheformofgranulesviatheGranshot?granulationprocess.Thegranulatedproducthasmanyadvantagessuchasexcellentpreheatingpropertiesandfastmeltingwhenaddedtoametallurgicalprocess.Thegranulessizeandshapealsomakesitverysuitabletohandlewithmostrawmaterialhandlingsystems.Bygranulatingtheso-calledalloyedpigiron(API)ahighmetallicyieldisachievedensuringmaximumrecoveryofmetalandlessnewdustgenerationcomparedtoacrushedmaterial.Thegranulesareredeliveredtothestainlesss
