摘要
AlthoughtheIndus-TsangpoSuture(ITS)isthemostspectacularthrustsystemofcontinent-continentcollisionintheworld,fundamentalquestionsaboutitsstrengthevolutionanddeformationbehaviortransitionremainunanswered.Herewereported,forthefirsttime,frictionalmelting-inducedpseudotachylytesintheintensivelydeformedfelsicrocksalongtheITSzoneinsouthernTibet.ThisstudyrevealsthatpseudotachylytesinducedprofoundweaknessoftheboundaryfaultbetweenIndianandAsianplates.Theintrinsicallylowstrengthofthefoliatedmicrolitescrystallizedfromfrictionalmeltorglass(i.e.,pseudotachylyte)atseismogenicdepthscomparedwiththesurroundingcoarse-grainedquartzofeldspathicrocksinthebrittleandsemi-brittleregimeissufficienttoexplainthelocalizationofshearstrain,thedevelopmentofductileshearzonesembeddedinstrongwallrocks,andthetransitionfromthestrongtoweakfaultbehaviorswithoutinvokingthepresenceofhighfluidpressureorlowfrictioncoefficientmetasomaticmaterials(e.g.,smectiteorlizardite)withinthefaults.
