简介:Age-relatedhearingloss(AHL),orpresbycusis,isthemostcommonneurodegenerativedisorderandtopcommunicationdeficitoftheagedpopulation.GeneticpredispositionisoneofthemajorfactorsinthedevelopmentofAHL.Generally,AHLisassociatedwithanage-dependentlossofsensoryhaircells,spiralganglionneuronsandstriavasculariscellsintheinnerear.Althoughthemechanismsleadingtogenetichearinglossarenotcompletelyunderstood,caspase-familyproteasesfunctionasimportantsignalsintheinnerearpathology.ItisnowacceptedthatmousemodelsarethebesttoolstostudythemechanismofgenetichearinglossorAHL.Here,weprovideabriefreviewofrecentstudiesonhearingimprovementinmousemodelsofAHLbyanti-apoptotictreatment.
简介:AIM:Todeterminereallifeclinicaloutcomesinpoorlyresponsiveandtreatment-naveneovascularage-relatedmaculardegeneration(nvAMD)patientsusingbimonthlyfixeddosingafliberceptregimen.METHODS:Thiswasaretrospectivestudyof165eyeswithnvAMDstartedonafliberceptatSouthamptonEyeUnitbetweenJune2013andJune2014.Patientswereeitherswitchedfromprorenata(PRN)ranibizumab/bevacizumabduetopoorresponse(107eyes),ortreatment-nave(58eyes).Patientsinitiallyreceived3-monthlyintravitrealafliberceptinjectionsfollowedby2-monthlyfixeddoses.Clinicvisitswerescheduledatmonth0,4,10and12.Meanchangeinbest-correctedvisualacuity(BCVA)andcentralretinalthickness(CRT)frombaselinewereassessedusingtheWilcoxonsignedranktest.TheproportionofpatientsmaintainingBCVA(<15lettersloss)at12mowasalsoevaluated.RESULTS:MeanBCVAchangeatmonth12was+3.29and+4.67lettersintheswitchedandnaveafliberceptgroupsrespectively(P<0.01).BCVAwasmaintainedin95.3%ofswitchedand96.6%ofnavepatients.CRTatmonth12showedadecreaseof-6.16μmintheswitchedgroupand-35.36μminthenavegroup(P<0.01).Patientspreviouslytreatedwithranibizumab/bevacizumabhadonaveragereceived7.4ranibizumab/bevacizumabinjectionsover12.6mo,attending10clinicvisits.Thefixeddosingafliberceptregimenrequiredanaverageof7.1injections(navegroup),7.5injections(switchedgroup)and4clinicvisitsperyear.CONCLUSION:Fixedbimonthlyafliberceptiseffectiveinbothtreatment-naveandpoorlyresponsivenvAMDpatients.Adoptingafixeddosingregimencanreducepatientburdenwithoutcompromisingonoutcomes.
简介:Inthisstudy,changesinArcticseaicethicknessforeachiceagecategorywereexaminedbasedonsatelliteobservationsandmodelledresults.InterannualchangesobtainedfromIce,Cloud,andLandElevationSatellite(ICESat)-basedresultsshowathicknessreductionoverperennialseaice(icethatsurvivesatleastonemeltseasonwithanageofnolessthan2year)uptoapproximately0.5–1.0mand0.6–0.8m(dependingoniceage)duringtheinvestigatedwinterandautumnICESatperiods,respectively.Pan-ArcticIceOceanModelingandAssimilationSystem(PIOMAS)-basedresultsprovideaviewofacontinuedthicknessreductionoverthepastfourdecades.Comparedto1980s,thereisaclearthicknessdropofroughly0.50min2010sforperennialice.Thisoveralldecreaseinseaicethicknesscanbeinpartattributedtotheamplifiedwarmingclimateinnorthlatitudes.Besides,wefigureoutthatstronglyanomaloussoutherlysummersurfacewindsmayplayanimportantroleinpromptingthethicknessdeclineinperennialicezonethroughtransportingheatdepositedinopenwater(primarilyviaalbedofeedback)inEurasiansectordeepintoabroaderseaiceregimeincentralArcticOcean.Thisheatsourceisresponsibleforenhancedicebottommelting,leadingtofurtherreductioninicethickness.
简介:Thefirstbirthmarksatransitionofawomanintomotherhood.Itcontributessubstantiallytooverallfertilityofeachindividualwoman.Theageatwhichchildbearingbeginsinfluencesthenumberofchildrenawomanbearsthroughoutherwholereproductivelifespan.Thus,themother’sageatfirstbirthinfluencesthetotalnumberofbirthsthatshemighthaveinherlife,whichimpactsthesize,composition,andfuturegrowthofthepopulation.Child-bearingatveryyoungagesiscommonamongthepoorinBangladesh.Theobjectiveofthepresentstudyistoexaminethefactorsassociatedwithageatfirstbirthamongslumdwellersoffiveselectedslums(locally,colony)inSylhetcitycorporationarea,Bangladesh.Thedataofthisstudywascollectedfrom520womenaged14-50years.Thestudyfoundthatalmost93%ofwomenweremarriedbytheagesof18yearsandabout56%ofthewomenhavehadtheirfirstchildbytheageof18years.TheOrdinaryLeastSquares(OLS)regressionmodelwasusedtoanalyzethefactorscorrelatedwithwomen’sageatfirstbirth.TheregressionmodelissignificantwithanF-valueof49.48andcanexplain40.4%ofthevariationinthedependentvariableasitisindicatedbytheR-square.
简介:Objective:Toreportcomplicationsrelatedtoflaparoundimplantsaftercochlearimplantation,possiblecausesofsuchcomplicationsandtreatments.Methodsandmaterial:Weperformedaretrospectiveanalysisofchildreninwhomcomplicationsrelatedtoflaparoundimplantsoccurredafterundergoingcochlearimplantationinourdepartmentfrom2005to2016.Results:Complicationsamong1500cochlearimplantation(CI)recipientsbythesamesurgeonincludedhematoma(n?20)andseromaaroundimplants(n?15),ofwhichmost(n?10)recoveredin2weeksaftereffectivedrainage,utilityofantibioticsandpressuredressing,but5developedflapnecrosisandhadtoundergocontralateralre-implantation.Fourpatientsdevelopedabscessaroundimplants,ofwhom2recoveredafter2weeksofdrainage,gentamicinirrigationanduseofantibiotics,but2patientsendedupwithflapnecrosisandhadtoreceivecontralateralreimplantation.Conclusions:Immediatedrainage,pressuredressingandantibioticscanbeusedtoeffectivelycontrolseromaaroundimplants.Forseromalastingformorethantwoweekswithoutimprovement,surgicaldrainagemaybeneed.

简介:Abinaural-loudness-model-basedmethodforevaluatingthespatialdiscriminationthresholdofmagnitudesofhead-relatedtransferfunction(HRTF)isproposed.Astheinputofthebinauralloudnessmodel,theHRTFmagnitudevariationscausedbyspatialpositionvariationswerefirstlycalculatedfromahigh-resolutionHRTFdataset.Then,threeperceptualrelevantparameters,namelyinterauralloudnessleveldifference,binauralloudnesslevelspectra,andtotalbinauralloudnesslevel,werederivedfromthebinauralloudnessmodel.Finally,thespatialdiscriminationthresholdsofHRTFmagnitudewereevaluatedaccordingtojust-noticedifferenceoftheabove-mentionedperceptual-relevantparameters.AseriesofpsychoacousticexperimentswasalsoconductedtoobtainthespatialdiscriminationthresholdofHRTFmagnitudes.Resultsindicatethatthethresholdderivedfromtheproposedbinaural-loudness-modelbasedmethodisconsistentwiththatobtainedfromthetraditionalpsychoacousticexperiment,validatingtheeffectivenessoftheproposedmethod.

简介:Objective:TheexpressionofB-celllymphoma2(Bcl-2)seemstobeinfluencedbytheendocrineenvironment.NumerousreportsdemonstratethediverseexpressionofBcl-2familymembersundersexsteroidregulation.Withtheexceptionofestrogen-relatedtumors,androgen-relatedtumorshaveshowntheircharacteristicsinBcl-2expression.Inthisstudy,thestatusofBcl-2expressioninmalehepatocellularcarcinoma(HCC)patientswasexaminedtoverifythehighincidenceofHCCinmales.Methods:TumortissuemicroarraywasusedtoexamineBcl-2expressionlevelsin374HCCcasesincluding306malesand68females.Kaplan-Meiermethod,log-ranktest,andCoxproportionalhazardsmodelwereappliedtoinvestigatethepredictivevalueofBcl-2inHCCpatients.Results:ImmunohistochemistryanalysisshowedthatmalepatientswithhigherBcl-2levelshadsignificantlylongermediansurvivaltimeandrecurrencetimethanthosewithlowerlevels.However,nosignificantdifferencesinoutcomeswerefoundbetweendifferentBcl-2levelsinfemalepatients.Whenthemalepatientswerestratifiedintoseveralagepoints,thelevelofBcl-2expressionshowedpoorerpredictiveefficiencyinthe45–49and55–60agegroupsinandropause-agepatientscomparedwithotheragegroups.Bcl-2wasanindependentprognosticfactorforbothoverallsurvival(P<0.0001)andrecurrencetime(P=0.0001)inmalepatients.Afterexcludingmalepatientsinthe45–60agegroup,thepredictiveefficiencywasenhanced(n=147,OS,P=0.0002,TTR,P<0.0001).Conclusions:Bcl-2expressionisanindependentpredictorofsurvivalandrecurrenceinmaleHCC.Bcl-2levelsmayalsoberegulatedbyandrogensorandrogenreceptorsinmaleHCCpatients.Bcl-2levelschangeandexhibitpoorpredictiveefficiencywhenandrogenlevelsvarydramatically(andropauseage).
简介:Purpose:Thepurposeofthepresentstudywastoinvestigatetheage-relatedchangesintheenduranceperformanceamongmaleamateurmarathonrunners.Methods:Subjectsweretakenfromthe36StockholmMarathonsheldfrom1979through2014,andageandfinishingtimewereanalyzedforatotalof312,342malerunners.Results:Therelationwasfoundtobeasecond-orderpolynomial,t=a+bx+cx~2,whichmodels99.7%ofthevariationintheaveragerunningtimetasafunctionofagex.Themodelshowsthatthemarathonperformanceoftheaveragerunnerimprovesuptoage34.3±2.6years,thereafter,theperformancestartstodecline.Aquantificationoftheage’sinfluenceonrunningtimeshowsthatitaccountsfor4.5%ofthetotalvarianceseenintheperformancedata.Conclusion:Theseoutcomesindicatethattheeffectofageonperformanceinendurancerunningeventsisclearlymeasurable,quantifiable,andpossibletodescribe.Atthesametimethefindingsindicatethatotherfactors,suchastraining,affecttheperformancemore.Acomparisonwiththeeliteshowedpeakperformanceatthesameage,buttheratesofchangeinperformancewithage,improvementaswellasdegradation,wasfoundtobehigheramongtheelite.
