简介:Thermalconvectiveprecipitation(TCP)oftenoccursovermainlandChinainsummerwhentheareaisdominatedbythewesternPacificsubtropicalhigh(WPSH).ItiswellknownthattheWPSHoftenbringsaboutlargescalesubsidence,thenwhycoulddeepmoistconvectionoccurandwheredoesthewatervaporcomefrom?Inthispaper,adeepconvectiveprecipitationcasethathappenedon2August2003isstudiedinordertoaddressthesetwoquestions.First,thecharacteristicsoftheTCPeventareanalyzedusingtheTropicalRainfallMeasuringMission(TRMM)satellitedata,automaticweatherstationobservations,andthedatafromtheUSNationalCentersforEnvironmentalPrediction(NCEP).Second,watervaporsourcesareidentifiedthroughexaminingsurfaceevaporation,watervaporadvection,andwatervaporfluxdivergencecalculatedbyusingaregionallyaveragedwatervaporbudgetequation.Furthermore,usinganAdvancedRegionalEta-coordinateModel(AREM),contributionsofsensibleandlatentheatfluxestotheTCParecomparedthroughfoursensitivityexperiments.TheresultsshowthatintheregionscontrolledbytheWPSH,surfacetemperaturerisesrapidlyaftersunrise.Uponreceivingenoughsensibleheat,theairgoesupandleadstoconvergenceintheloweratmosphere.Thenthewatervaporassembledfromthesurroundingsandthegroundsurfaceistransportedtotheupperlevels,andafavorableenvironmentfortheTCPforms.Amodeldatadiagnosisindicatesthatabouthalfofprecipitablewatercomesfromtheconvergenceofhorizontalfluxesofwatervapor,andtheotherhalffromsurfaceevaporation,whilelittleisfromadvection.AdditionalsensitivityexperimentsprovethatbothsensibleandlatentheatingareessentialfortheonsetoftheTCP.Thesensibleheatfluxtriggersthermodynamicascendingmotion,andthelatentheatfluxprovideswatervapor,butthecontributiontoTCPfromthelatterisalittlesmallerthanthatfromtheformer.

简介:Invoking45-yrdailyEuropeanCentreforMedium-rangeWeatherForecasts(ECMWF)reanalysisdata,firstlyallthesuddenstratosphericwarming(SSW)eventsareselectedintheseyears,whichcanbeclassifiedintotwocategories:downward-propagatingeventandnon-downward-propagatingevent.Andthen,basedonpotentialvorticitydistributiononisentropicsurfaces(IPV),temperaturefield,andzonalwindfield,adetaileddescriptionoftheSSWoccurringduringthewinter-spring(DecemberandthefollowingJanuary,February,March)in2000-01and2001-02isgiven.Finally,theevolvementofpolarvortexduringwarmingprocessandtheimpactofwarmingontropospherearediscussed.Itisfoundthat(1)thereisinter-decadalvariationforstratosphericwarmingphenomenon;(2)theSSWeventlastingfromlateJanuarytillearlyMarchin2001canpropagatedownwardtotroposphere;(3)duringthisSSW,thereiszonal-meaneasterlywindsinbothstratosphereandtroposphere;(4)thetwowarmingeventsduringDecember2001andMarch2002cannotpropagatedownwardtotroposphere,whilezonaleasterlywindsonlyappearinstratosphere;and(5)intheprocessofthetwotypesofwarming,alongandnarrowhigh-valueIPV'tongue'extendsoutfrommainpolarvortex,whichbreaksoutthegradientofIPV.Comparedwiththenon-downward-propagatingstratosphericwarmingcase,thehighestvalueofIPVdepartsfartherfrompoleandthe'tongue'islongerandnarrowerduringthedownward-propagatingwarmingevent.Pinchedbyanticyclonefrommiddlelatitude,thestratosphericpolarvortexwilldisplace,distortorbreakdown.Bycontrast,thechangeofpolarvortexisgreaterinthecourseofdownward-propagatingwarmingevent.Also,tropospherecirculationandpolarvortexevolveindifferentdegree,andusuallybothofthemgowithblocking,buttheaboveevolvementinthedownward-propagatingwarmingismoredistinct.
简介:Temporalandspatialevolutioncharacteristicsofthe30-60dayoscillation(intraseasonaloscillation,ISO)ofsummerrainfallinChinaandtheeffectsofEastAsianmonsoonontherainfallISOareanalyzedinthispaper.Resultsshowthattheannualanddecadalvariationsoftheoscillationexistbetween1960and2008,andtheintensityisweakestinthelate1970sandearly1980s.InthetypicalstrongyearsoftherainfallISOobtainedfromempiricalorthogonalfunctions(EOFmode1),ananticycloneisinnorthwesternPacificandacycloneisintheeastofChina.Inthetypicalweakyears,thewindISOismuchweaker.Thelow-frequencyzonalwindandwatervaportransportfromthelowlatitudestomid-latitudesinthetypicalstrongyears,andtheoscillationstrengthofdiabaticheatingismuchstrongerthanthatintheweakyearsoftherainfallISO.TheanomalycharacteristicsoftherainfallISOshowanti-phasesbetweentheYangtzeRiverbasinandsouthofChina.AsforthetypicalstrongyearsoftherainfallISOintheYangtzeRiverbasin(EOFmode2),themainoscillationcenterofwatervaporisintheeastofChina(20-30°N,110-130°E).Inthepeak(break)phaseoftherainfalloscillation,alow-frequencycyclone(anticyclone)isintheYangtzeRiverbasinandananticyclone(cyclone)isnearTaiwanIsland.Inaddition,thepeakrainfallcorrespondstotheheatsourceintheYangtzeRiverbasinandtheheatsinkintheQinghai-TibetPlateau.AsforthetypicalstrongyearsoftherainfallISOinthesouthofChina,themainoscillationcenterofwatervaporissouthof20°N.Inthepeak(break)phaseoftherainfallISO,alow-frequencycyclone(anticyclone)isinthesouthofChinaandananticyclone(cyclone)isinthePhilippines.ThepeakrainfallcorrespondstotheheatsourceinthesouthofChinaandtheSouthChinaSea,andtheheatsinkinthewestofIndochina.
简介:Theatmosphericintraseasonaloscillation(ISO)anditsinterannualvariabilityaresimulatedbytheatmosphericgeneralcirculationmodel,whichwasdevelopedattheInstituteofAtmosphericPhysics.Twonumericalexperimentswereperformed,correspondingtotheAMIP-IandAMIP-IIsimulations,respectively.Themodelreasonablyreproducesthemajoraspectsoftheintraseasonaloscillation,includingthepropagatingpropertyandtheseasonaldifferencesinthetropics,thewavenumberstructureofISOintheglobe,andtheglobalcoincidenceintheinterannualvariationofISO.Comparisonoftheresultsbetweenthetwoexperimentssuggeststhatimprovementoftheboundaryforcingorconsideringtheair-seainteractionmayhelptoimprovethesimulationontheISOanditsinterannualvariability.

简介:Inthecontextofadvectiondynamics,19experiments(Exps.)areperformedusingaquasi-geostrophicbarotropicvorticityequationmodeltoexploretheconditionforthemergenceofbinaryvorticesandtheself-organizationofthelargerscalevortex.Resultsshowthattheinitialdistancebetweenthecentersofbinaryvorticesandthenon-axisymmetricdistributionsoftheirinitialvorticityaretwofactorsaffectingthemergenceofbinaryvortices.Thereisacriticaldistanceforthemergenceofinitialsymmetricbinaryvortices,however,themergenceofinitialnon-axisymmetricbinaryvorticesisalsoaffectedbytheasymmetricstructureofinitialvortices.Theself-organizationprocessesin19experimentscanbeclassifiedintotwotypes:oneisthemergingofidentical,axisymmetricbinaryvorticesinwhichtheinteractionofthetwovorticesundergoesslowlychange,rapidchange,andtheformation,stretching,anddevelopmentofthefilamentsofvorticity,andthetwovorticesmergeintoasymmetricvortex,withitsvorticitypiledupintheinnerregioncomingfromthetwoinitialvortices,andthevorticityofthespiralbandintheouterregionfromthestretchingofthefilamentsofthetwoinitialvortices.Andtheothertypeisthemergingofthetwonon-axisymmetricinitialvorticesofanellipticvortexandaneccentricvortexinwhichtheellipticvortex,ontheonehand,mutuallyrotates,andontheotherhandmovestowardsthecenterofthecomputationaldomain,atthesametimeexpandsitsvorticityarea,andatlastformstheinnercoreofresultantstatevortex;andtheeccentricvortexmutuallyrotates,meanwhilecontinuouslystretches,andfinallyformsthespiralbandofresultantstatevortex.Theinteractionprocessischaracteristicofthevorticitypiledupintheinnercoreregionofresultantstatevortexoriginatingfromtheellipticvortexandthevorticityinspiralbandmainlyfromthesuccessivestretchandruptureoftheeccentricvortex.
