ThispaperredefinestheconceptsofEnglishasauniversitydiscipline,qualityeducation,patternsoftrainingEnglishmajorsandthedemandfortheminthemarket.ThroughcarefulanalysisthepaperpointsoutthatitisdifficultorunnecessaryforEnglishdepartmentstoshoulderthesoleresponsibilityoftrainingstudents"withmultipleskills".Theintroductionofnon-EnglishcoursesintoEnglishdepartmentsisbothshortsightedandmisleading.OneofthereasonswhyEnglishdepartmentsinChinaareeagertodeviatefromthenormofEFLteachingisthattheyfailtounderstandproperlytheirownpositioninhighereducation.ThepapermaintainsthatwhatEnglishmajorspresentlylackisnotthetechnicalknowledgeand/orskillsforaparticularjobbuttheabilitytothinkcreativelyandadaptthemselvestotheever-changingmarket.ThepapermakesapredictionthatEnglishdepartmentsinChinawillsoonerorlaterreturntotheir"properbusiness"ofteachingEnglishlanguageandculture.
