UsingfieldobservationsatfourgaugingstationsalongtheInnerMongoliaReachoftheYellowRiverinChina,thispaperexploreseffectsoftheiceonthehydraulicsofthisriverreachforfourdifferentconditions,namely:underopenchannelflow,duringice-runningperiod,theice-coveredperiod,andtheriverbreak-upperiod.Theratingcurveswerefoundtobewellrecognizedunderopenchannelsituations,butweresometimespoorlydefinedandextremelyvariableundericeconditions.Theresultsalsoshowthatthewaterlevelisinsensitivetoflowingicepriortofreeze-up.However,significant,buthardlysurprising,variationswereobservedduringice-coveredconditions.Theratingcurvesforboththeicecoveredconditionandrivericebreakupperiodaredevelopedandsomerelatedhydraulicissuesareexamined.Additionally,theimpactsoftheiceaccumulationandassociatedriverbeddeformationduringiceperiodontheratingcurvesarediscussed.
