Shanxihasinrecentyearsachievedsignificantresultsinitsexpresswayconstruction.Bytheendof2000,theprovincialexpresswaymileageextendedto518kilometers-whichisthelengthoftheTaiyuan-JiuguanExpressway-ranking11minthecountry.Afterthat,Shanxiinvestedanother20billionyuaninbuildingthe666-kilometer-longDatong-YunchengExpresswayrunningtheentirelengthoftheprovincefromDatonginthenorthtoYunchenginthesouth.IttraversesDatong,Shuozhou,Xinzhou,Taiyuan,Linfen,Houma,andYuncheng-oilimportantcitiesofShanxiwithindustrialandpopulationconcentrationandrichnaturalresources.Theconstrudionofthisfreeway,whichconnectsallpartsofthecountrybytheinterlockingnationalroadgrid,willcontributehugelynotonlytothesocialandeconomicdevelopmentofShanxi,butalsotothatofChina.
