Developmentofhighenergylasersourceswithnanosecondpulsesatseveralhertzvaluesforrepetitionratehasbeenveryattractiveinrecentyearsduetotheirgreatpotentialforpracticalapplications.Withtherecentadvancementinfabricatinglargesizelaserqualitytransparentceramics,diodepumpedsolid-statelasergeneratingpulseenergyof100Jat10HzhasbeenrecentlyrealizedatHiLASEcenterusingYb:YAGceramicwithCr:YAGcladding.ThisreviewdiscussesYbbasedhighenergylasers,specificlasergeometriesforefficientthermalmanagementandtheroleoftransparentceramicsinsuchdiodepumpedhigh-energy-classsolid-statelasersaroundtheworld.
