StimulatedbyrecentdrasticchangesintheinternationalsituationandwiththeaimofmaximizingJapan’snationalinterests,thegovernmentofShinzoAbeistryingtoadoptanationalstrategythatdeviatesfromandevencontradictsthatoftheUnitedStates,whilemaintainingtheframeworkofUS-Japanallianceandavoidinghead-onconfrontationwithUSinterests.Thispursuitof“strategicindependence”1isdistinguishedasbeingindependentlydesignedandself-contained.Itnotonlyinherits2thestrategicambitionsofpreviousJapanesegovernmentsbutisalsoinnovativeandground-breaking.
