摘要
GiventheresilienceofConfucianism,Chinesestudentscontinuetobeinfluencedbytheirculturalbeliefsystems,whichhaveaneffectontheirEnglish-second-language(ESL)learningexperienceinanEnglish-speakingcountry.ThisisespeciallyapparentsinceChinesestudentsexperiencethegreatestculturaldemandsincountrieswithopposingcustomsandvalues.ThemostpowerfultenetsofChineseculturearemaintainingharmony,collectivity,andhierarchicalrelationships.TheseaspectsofChinesecultureinfluencethecommunicationstyleoftheChineseandtheireducationalsystem.ThisarticleexaminesfivemaincharacteristicsofChinesecommunication:implicitcommunication,listening-centeredness,politeness,focusoninsiders,andface-savingstrategies.TheChineseemphasisoneducationandacademicachievementisdiscussedintermsofparentalinfluence,environment,effortversusability,andpedagogywithintheChineseculturalcontext.EducationalimplicationsforChineseESLstudentsstudyinginCanadaarealsoaddressed.
