摘要
Someresearchers,runninginstructors,andcoacheshavesuggestedthatthe'optimal'footstrikepatterntoimproveperformanceandreducerunninginjuriesistolandusingamid-orforefootstrike.Thus,ithasbeenrecommendedthatrunnerswhousearearfootstrikewouldbenefitbychangingtheirfootstrikealthoughthereislittlescientificevidenceforsuggestingsuchachange.Therearfootstrikeisclearlymoreprevalent.Themajorreasonsoftengivenforchangingtoamid-orforefootstrikeare(1)itismoreeconomical;(2)thereisareductionintheimpactpeakandloadingrateoftheverticalcomponentofthegroundreactionforce;and(3)thereisareductionintheriskofarunning-relatedinjuries.Inthispaper,wecritiquethese3suggestionsandprovidealternateexplanationsthatmayprovidecontradictoryevidenceforalteringone'sfootstrikepattern.Wehaveconcluded,basedonexaminingtheresearchliterature,thatchangingtoamid-orforefootstrikedoesnotimproverunningeconomy,doesnoteliminateanimpactatthefoot-groundcontact,anddoesnotreducetheriskofrunning-relatedinjuries.
