IntroductionLead-inmeanstointroducestudentsgentlytotopicstheyaregoingtodealwith,settlethemdownatthebeginningofalessonandgenerallypreparethemforthetopic.Usinglead-insinlanguageteachingisnotanewidea.Someofthemorerecenttextbooks,notably‘StepbyStep’,andotherteachers’books,havewarming-upexercisesandculturalbackgroundinformationwhichteacherscanuseaslead-in.However,formanyyears,becauseofalackofsuitabletraininginteachingmethodology,manyEnglishteacherstendedtoneglectlead-in,thefirststepinpresentingatext,andwentdirectlyintothetextitself.Thestudentswereconfrontedwithsomethingtheyknewnothingabout,andhadnoparticulardesiretoknowabout.Theywereexpectedtoadjustthemselvestotheteachingcontext.
