EveryOctober,carvedpumpkinspeeroutfromporchesanddoorstepsintheUnitedStatesandotherpartsoftheworld.Gourd-likeorangefruitsinscribedwithghoulishfacesandilluminatedbycandlesareasuresignoftheHalloweenseason.Thepracticeofdecorating"jack-o'-lanterns"-thenamecomesfromanIrishfolktaleaboutamannamedStingyJack-originatedinIreland,wherelargeturnipsandpotatoesservedasanearlycanvas.IrishimmigrantsbroughtthetraditiontoAmerica,homeofthepumpkin,anditbecameanintegralpartofHalloweenfestivities.
