Basedonnormalizedsix-hourlyblackbodytemperature(TBB)dataofthreegeostationarymeteorologicalsatellites,theleadingmodesofthemei-yucloudsystembetween1998and2008wereextractedbytheEmpiricalOrthogonalFunction(EOF)method,andthetransitionprocessesfromthefirsttypicalleadingmodetootherleadingmodeswerediscussedandcompared.Theanalysisshowsthat,whenthesouthernmode(EOF1)transformstothenortheasternmode(EOF3),inthemid-troposphere,alowtroughdevelopsandmovessoutheastwardovercentralandeasternChina.Thecirculationpatternischaracterizedbytwohighsandonelowinthelowertroposphere.AbeltoflowpressureissandwichedbetweentheweakhighovercentralandwesternChinaandthestrongwesternNorthPacificsubtropicalhigh(WNPSH).Coldairmovessouthwardalongthenortherlyflowbehindthelow,andmeetsthewarmandmoistairbetweentheWNPSHandtheforepartofthelowtrough,whichleadstocontinuousconvection.Atthesametime,thecentralextentoftheWNPSHincreaseswhileitsridgeextendswestward.Inaddition,transitionsfromthesouthernmodetothedualcentersmodeandthetropical-low-influencedmodewerefoundtobeatypical,andsonocommonpointscouldbeconcluded.Furthermore,thechoiceofthresholdvaluecanaffectthenumberofsamplesdiscussed.
