LetRbeafinitechainringwithmaximalidealγandresiduefieldF,andletγbeofnilpotencyindext.ToeverycodeCoflengthnoverR,atowerofcodesC=(C:γ0)(C:γ)(C:γi)(C:γt-1)canbeassociatedwithC,whereforanyr∈R,(C:r)={e∈Rn|re∈C}.UsinggeneratorelementsoftheprojectionofsuchatowerofcodestotheresiduefieldF,wecharacterizecycliccodesoverR.ThischaracterizationturnstheconditionforcodesoverRtobecyclicintooneforcodesovertheresiduefieldF.Furthermore,weobtainacharacterizationofcycliccodesovertheformalpowerseriesringofafinitechainring.
